THE COUNCIL OF ELDERS TARGETS TROUBLED YOUTH
...Tony Sherman, Renown Artist, Lecturer, Author, Founder & Chief Elder
MAKING A DIFFERENCE!
The Council of Elders consists of qualified volunteers from the community, who agree to
voluntarily counsel troubled youth for a minimum of four hours a month. The Elders use
appropriate methods of counseling to help the student get back on track in their attitudes;
their vision for the future, and their work habits. We recognize that many students have
family dynamics which prevent them from having an upbringing full of support and
expressed love. Then comes the Office of the Attorney General (Texas), which has provided
specific rules and responsibilities for all involved in school/student relationships. In the 21st
Century, these rules are seen to be interpreted more strict in some schools than in others.
A student with documented history of classroom disruption, may be removed. Should this
occur, the Principal's options are: The reassignment to another classroom; in school
suspension; placement in an Alternative Education Program; or sent to the office of the
Justice of the Peace. The schools Placement Review Committee however, may now refer
the student to a community based program called The Council of Elders.
 | | The Council of Elders uses the "It takes a Village" approach to address student |
| | issues. COE provides effective direction to students and parents, and offers schools a written report at the end of each student session.

COMING BEFORE THE COUNCIL
Picture this!
You are a 14 year old kid who has violated the school rules on several occasions. You have
been written up by the teacher and the principal offers you the "COE" program. Now you sit
in front of three "Elders" from the community, who want to know something about your
background. They probe to find out what kind of friends you have. They ask, "Are you a
leader or a follower?" They want to know where you want to attend college. "Why are you
not giving yourself a chance to be successful in the future?" they ask. "Are you trying to get
more attention?" The questions go on and on until the Elders describe their own path to
success. Finally, the senior Elder says, "Son, we want you to reenter that classroom and
start paying attention. We want you to show that teacher and the others, that you can get
good grades and follow instructions. In fact we expect you to do well, because we expect
you will be one of our future leaders one day. We need you to do your best every single day.
The reason is because we care about you, and your future! ...Now...come Gimme a hug!"
THE COUNCIL OF ELDERS, INC
Do you have what it takes to become an Elder? It
has nothing to do with being elderly, believe it or
not! This program is about all of us doing our part
to help our community, by helping our troubled
youth-our future!
If you are between 18 and 99, you can be an
Elder. You must pass a criminal background
check (we will protect our kids), and a 3 hour
training course. Then, just make yourself
available at least 3 hours a month to counsel
kids and their parents, along with two other
Elders. Believe me...your presence will make a
world of difference in the lives of our youth.
